Glasses for Katy Kids Program

A Vision for the Community

Dr. Ryann and Dr. Brett Donaldson, of Grand Vision Center on Grand Pkwy., Katy ISD, and the Katy Family YMCA teamed up in 2004 to establish a funded program called “Glasses for Katy Kids”. With the Katy YMCA budgeting a portion of the Partners Campaign fund and Grand Vsion Center deeply discounting products and services, this funded program has helped over 1000 children receive eye care, but whose parents are financially unable to render payment for the services and products they so desperately need. Children many times are very aware of their financial situation at home and may not complain to their parents about needing glasses because they know they just can not afford them. It has been our experience that many children who have been labeled with learning difficulties or as a ‘problem child’, in fact, just can’t see well and either don’t know how or are too embarrassed to talk about what they are experiencing.

With the invaluable assistance of the Katy ISD school nurses headed by Dianne Klam, we are able to screen large numbers of children, establish which ones need vision services and enroll them into our program,” says Dr. Donaldson. The “Glasses for Katy Kids” program is now in its sixth year and with the generosity of our local businesses and citizens, it has become a mainstay in an ever growing list of our community programs. Dr. Ryann and Dr. Brett Donaldson are also avid volunteers in local programs like: Promise To Read, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, The Krause Center, Junior Achievement, Partners In Education, and Katy ARTReach.
